To facilitate these services, Rijkswaterstaat will install beacons along the corridor (Rotterdam, Breda, Tilburg, Eindhoven, Venlo). These beacons communicate with the on-board units of approaching vehicles using WiFi. It is expected that over the next few years, car manufacturers will fit these on-board units to many vehicles. Using a data communications network, the beacons also communicate with the Rijkswaterstaat traffic information centres where traffic is monitored. Beacons may be mobile or fixed. Mobile beacons will be fitted to the information display vehicles placed near road works. Fixed beacons will be installed on the existing roadside infrastructure.
Advantages of this service:
- The road network will be used more effectively as road managers and road users receive more information. This will reduce the number of traffic jams.
- The anonymised sensor data from vehicles will provide road managers with more information about the condition of the road surface, facilitating better and more efficient repair and management.
